Super Mario clouds or Art form ?
Super-mario ciouds is a game adpated from the original one which was so popular during 70th and 80th that called Super-Mario bros.
Cory Arcangel is the designer of this game whose work always show the complex relationship between the contempory technology and culture. He is called "digital media artist" whois famous for rewriting games.
But the thing that really surprised me is that he who was graduated from classical
guitar music prefers to put more energy in technogical culture than professional works. It makes me think of the debat that "Will Computer Game Ever Be A legitimate art form ?"
As so many people catagory videogame as "derecognized medium" because of the entertianment and stimulation it owns by nature .Even Ernest Ernest W.Adams has adopt the notion that videogame lacks the content and aesthetic value and it can be influenced by players .So it is more a popular culture than art .
Clearly, the super mario-clouds is a counter-example.
Firstly, this game has many reality hints largely coming from daily life. For eample, these clouds are always flowing slowly on the sky which simulates real scene.
These efforts are used to link illusion with reality .Then it will be easier for both designer and player put more subjective opinions in game . I think this may be called content.
Secondly, the art practice of Arcangle invovles the music and pattern from popular culture which ranges from electronic music of Guns and Roses ’ iconic Sweet Child of Mine to Glenn Gould' s typical work -Bach BWV988. These familiar resources
undoubtly bring about aesthetic pleasure .So why we insist that videogame cannot be
suggest as a form of art?
As I have said above, since videogames can be art or non-art, we should not only distinguish game from art, but also discriminate artistic game from craft -playing.
